THE Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested a Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) employee on allegations of soliciting a bribe from a customer in Chitungwiza.
The suspect, Wellington Tsaurai Chinyemba, a revenue assistant, was apprehended following a sting operation conducted by anti-corruption investigators.
According to ZACC, the incident occurred in St Mary’s suburb, where Chinyemba allegedly disconnected electricity at a residential property belonging to Clever Mpofu, citing illegal power connections.
It is alleged that after the disconnection, Chinyemba demanded a bribe of US$300 from Mpofu to facilitate reconnection and clear what he claimed were outstanding fines.
However, Mpofu reportedly sought clarification from ZESA, which advised him that the demand was unlawful and not part of official procedures.
He then reported the matter to ZACC, prompting investigators to set up a trap that led to Chinyemba’s arrest after he allegedly received the money.
Authorities said the arrest is part of ongoing efforts to curb corruption within public institutions and protect citizens from abuse of office.
Chinyemba is expected to appear in court soon to answer to the charges.
