Zesa has over the years failed to come up with a proper billing solution, a situation that resulted in the company losing millions of dollars as some consumers challenged their bills.
Minister Mangoma said a lot of ground work had been covered except a few negotiations with relevant authorities.
“The negotiations will be concluded soon and definitely by April work on the ground will be visible,” he said.
“The pre-paid meters are set to improve revenue and avoid charges based on estimates which consumers feel was defrauding them.”
Minister Mangoma said the system would be a milestone since the power utility would be in a position to collect revenue effectively.
Last year a local company with South African partners, REVMA, was awarded a $500 000 tender to install a new billing system for Zesa Holdings.
However, alleged underhand dealings between Zesa and the Tender Board in awarding the tender contributed towards the delays over the implementation of the system which should have been started last year.
Zesa will also distribute free compact fluorescent lamps (CFLS) in order to relieve stress on the national electricity grid as the lights are believed to save about 200 megawatts nationally. — New Ziana.
