ZIMBABWE Golf Association (ZGA) president Martin Chikwana, has hailed the forthcoming 2025 FBC Zimbabwe Open as the nation’s premier sporting event that has set high standards.

Scheduled to take place from May 4-11 at Royal Harare Golf Club, the tournament received a major boost, with FBC confirming a US$200 000 sponsorship deal, last week.

The FBC Zimbabwe Open, one of the most prestigious stops on the Sunshine Tour, is expected to attract top golfers from around the world.

“This event has always held great significance, as highlighted by our title sponsors, FBC. They’ve committed US$200 000 to this tournament, and I believe everyone would agree that it stands as the best sporting event in Zimbabwe. The range of individuals it brings together is immense, from the United States to Europe and across Africa, with a substantial contingent from South Africa,” said Chikwana.

This year’s edition will feature a field of 144 players, including a minimum of 17 local professionals and five amateurs.
Chikwana also expressed optimism that more young golfers would earn their place through the Pre-Qualifier rounds.

“We have five juniors, who have already secured direct entry into the tournament. In addition, a significant number of young players will be competing in the Pre-Qualifiers. I’m hopeful that another three or four will manage to qualify for the main event,” he said.

Chikwana also stressed the broader impact of the tournament, both nationally and within the local community.

“This event also brings the spotlight directly on Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Golf, in particular. It’s our time to shine, it’s our time to stand up and be counted and we must appreciate that when we stand up, it’s not just for us as Zimbabwe Golf, it’s for the hospitality industry and everyone else that brings value to the event. This is their time to be in the sun. We are excited as Zimbabwe Golf Association and are grateful to FBC, who anchor this event,” he said.
Mr Chikwana said the tournament had a very strong following.

“From last year, we had thousands of people. Speaking to the guys from the Sunshine Tour, they said the biggest numbers of spectators anywhere in Africa are found at the Zimbabwe Open. We can’t wait, let it all begin and hopefully, we will have one of the best events in a long time,” he said.

The Pre-Qualifier is scheduled for May 4–11, with the Championship rounds taking place from May 8–11.
