LEFT-ARM fast medium bowler Brighton Zhawi made his first class debut for Alliance Health Eagles in the Logan Cup cricket match against Mountaineers currently underway at the Harare Sports Club.
The 29-year-old Mufakose-born cricketer took his maiden wicket when he dismissed namesake Brighton Chipungu as Mountaineers reached 330 runs in their first innings.
Zhawi, who made his List A debut in 2015, had to wait six more years to play his first four-day game in the domestic cricket competitions.
Eagles won the toss yesterday and captain Chamu Chibhabha put their opponents in to bat first. Mountaineers had a jerky start but they did well to bat into the second day.
All-rounder Donald Tiripano frustrated the Eagles bowlers with a patient century that consumed in excess of five hours combined. Victor Nyauchi was also a handful down the order with his first half ton in 66 innings.
Nyauchi’s career best 71 was the second highest contribution by the Mountaineers batsmen. Wellington Masakadza scored 48 runs, batting at number eight.
PJ Moor, who has been playing in Ireland recently, marked his return to domestic cricket at the top with 41 runs. Keith Jaure was the pick of the Eagles bowlers for Eagles, taking 3-41. Gareth Chirawu and Kudzai Maunze are leading the Eagles chase.
