WITH Zimbabwe set to host the International Handball Federation Trophy Zone Six tournament in four months’ time, the local federation is not taking any chances as the Local Organising Committee met on Monday to map the way forward on the preparations.
The tournament is due to take place from April 25 to 30.
The local organising committee that was put in place last year when the country was initially scheduled to host the regional event will continue leading the preparations for next year.
Last year’s edition was shelved due to the Covid-19 pandemic but Zimbabwe have been afforded another opportunity after they were confirmed hosts for next year’s competition.
The committee led by Zimbabwe Handball Federation secretary general, Edson Chirowodza, held its second meeting on Monday.
The various sub-committees gave updates on the progress made in their respective areas and the way forward.
“Basically, it was confirming LOC members’ roles and responsibilities from where we had left in the previous year in terms of preparations for the games.
“And each constituency of the LOC was presenting updates in terms of how far they have gone in their capacities, the current state of preparedness of the sub-committees and the way forward.
“But we could not cover all areas and the general agreement is that we have recurring meetings, focusing on various areas,” said Chirowodza.
The other member of the committee is ZHF president Beauty Mtsambiwa, who comes in on a supervisory role.
Moreways Changa is the administrator and Reginald Tsimba is the chef de mission.
Farai Gwisai will be in charge of the technical aspects while Rosalia Jonga and Clemence Tauro are responsible for marketing.
Shingie Mutsvene takes charge of accommodation and Ignatius Vambe is in charge of ceremonies and protocol. Petros Nyathi is in charge of transport.
Medical will be led by Munyaradzi Mujuru and Nancy Simon while Tongai Mwenje and Alouis Nyamhanga are responsible for media and finance respectively.
The games are expected to take place at Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex and City Sports Centre, which are the two venues that were identified last year.
Renovations had begun at the two venues after recommendations that were made by African Handball Confederation director of sport Noel Assemian, who visited the country in February last year before the event was put on hold.
Chirowodza said they have since re-engaged some of the service providers for the upcoming competition.
“Basically in terms of general preparedness we had secured accommodation for officials and players and we have re-engaged some of the service providers and they are still ready to host us in terms of accommodation as we had initially planned for.
“Then coming to the issue of facilities we had proposed Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex and City Sports Centre as our games venues, so as we speak letters have been written for the responsible authorities, for the games venues, just to confirm that we are now hosting again.
