A 22-year-old Zhombe man killed his elder brother who was trying to stop him from fighting a fellow villager following a misunderstanding over a weekend soccer match between English sides Manchester City and Liverpool which they were all watching live on television.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the assault with stones and a wooden bench occurred at Hotera Village under Chief Samambwa in Zhombe on Saturday at 8:30pm.
Edmore Mhike (26) and younger brother Peter (22) were watching television with Joakim Moyo (29) of Mashavave Village under Chief Samambwa, Zhombe, at Nganunu Tuckshop in Empress.
Insp Mahoko said a misunderstanding arose between Mr Moyo and Peter over the match, with Mr Moyo disputing that Liverpool was playing better than Manchester City.
“This angered Peter who seemed to love Manchester City and started throwing stones at Mr Moyo,” he said.
“His brother Edmore intervened trying to stop him. Peter turned against his brother and attacked him with a wooden bench. Edmore fell down and Peter picked a stone and struck him on the head and he died instantly.”
Insp Mahoko said a manhunt for Peter was underway after he fled from the scene soon after fatally assaulting Edmore.
