A ray of hope has been ignited in Bulawayo’s creative community through the promises delivered by the Zimbabwe Council of Copyrights (Zicco).
On 8 February, ZICCO hosted a copyright awareness roadshow in the city, aimed at educating artistes, content creators, and businesses on copyright laws and the importance of licensing for establishments that play music.
During the roadshow, ZICCO announced benefits for registered artistes, including medical aid cover, funeral insurance, and free legal assistance for copyright-related issues.
Zicco chief executive officer Tafadzwa Masembura stated that the event marked the beginning of the organisation’s initiatives for the year.
“This is the first of many programmes that we’ve lined up as we fulfil our promises to our members. We aim to engage more stakeholders in the province and will roll out additional roadshows and educational seminars across the country to expand our reach,” he said.
Masembura shared plans to establish an arts school to equip members with life skills and enhance their understanding of their rights as creators.
“Additionally, we intend to fund the education of our young members by paying their fees,” Masembura added.

He urged artistes to approach their craft as a profession and a business, saying there is a need for financial planning to avoid hardships in later years.
“We’ve seen great musicians buried as paupers because they lacked investments to sustain them after retiring. To change this, we’re seeking support from like-minded organisations and individuals to set up income-generating projects for our members. This will provide artistes with financial security beyond their musical careers,” he said.
Masembura highlighted that the arts industry directly benefits more than 20 000 people in Zimbabwe.
Founded in February 2023, Zicco has been at the forefront of protecting creators’ rights and promoting copyright awareness. In addition to collecting royalties on behalf of rights holders, the organisation offers educational workshops, legal support, and licensing services to businesses using copyrighted materials.
Zicco’s initiatives have increased membership and stronger partnerships within the creative sector. The organisation has 2 200 registered members nationwide and works closely with law enforcement agencies to combat piracy. – @SipepisiweMoyo
