ZIFA apologise over Gambe’s utterances

Zimbabwe Women Football board member competitions Cecilia Gambe could have courted trouble for herself for the statements she made accusing the Government for not helping the Mighty Warriors on their way to qualifying for next year’s Olympic Games. Gambe on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on Government ministries and the corporate world, accusing them of shutting them out during their time of need, and only resurfacing to share in their glory.

The senior women football official made the remarks at a reception hosted by the City of Harare to celebrate the Mighty Warriors’ qualification for the Olympic Games at the expense of West Africa giants Cameroon.

However, ZIFA communications manager Xolisani Gwesela said the statements were reckless and revealed that Gambe will face sanctions.

“ZIFA would like to profusely apologise for the unfortunate statements attributed to one member of the ZIFA Congress.

“The association would like to distance itself from the contents of the statements which we believe were her own opinions and not those of the Association.

“Therefore, ZIFA apologises to the Minister of Sport and Recreation, line ministries as well as to the Government.

“We want to assure the nation that corrective measures will be taken so that there won’t be a repeat of such conduct which sets the Association on a collision course with football stakeholders.

“ZIFA shall forever remain indebted and grateful to the Ministry of Sport and Recreation, line ministries, the Zimbabwean populace and the corporate world for the support rendered towards the national teams and development of football in the country,” said Gwesela.

Gwesela acknowledged the Mighty Warriors succeeded under difficult conditions but said this was due to the prevailing economic challenges as the team has received support time and again from the numerous stakeholders.

Gambe, a motor-mouth who appears to lose her focus when given the limelight, was also scathing in her attack of the media.
