Zifa appoints new high performance technical committee

THE Zimbabwe Football Association has appointed a new high performance technical committee which will be headed by John Phiri, who is also the association’s Board member for development. The committee takes over from the previous one that was led by former Zifa board member for competitions Benedict Moyo.

Zifa communications manager, Xolisani Gwesela said other members of the committee include coaching instructor, Gibson Homela, who was also part of the previous board, veteran coach Cosmas Zulu, Zimbabwe Soccer Coaches Association head, Bhekimpilo Nyoni, former Blue Ribbon coach, Misheck Chidzambwa and Charles Sibanda.

Other members of the new committee include Mike Ngore and Zifa technical director, Takaendesa Jongwe.

Moyo and fired former Zifa technical director, Nelson Matongorere are the only missing members from the previous committee.

The body’s role is to help national team coaches by monitoring performances of players, making recommendations and also reviewing the teams’ performances.

The national team coach, however, has the final decision on the issues which would have been deliberated upon and recommended.

The previous committee which was tasked with coming up with the national teams’ strategy document, coaches database, review reports and technical study reports did little during its tenure as it was not consulted with no resources availed to it. Its term of office was set to end at the beginning of the month.

Gwesela said the committee’s first task would be to review the disastrous campaign by the senior national team that failed to go past the first round of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after losing 3-2 on aggregate to Tanzania.

While the previous body was not adequately funded nor frequently consulted, Gwesela said the new committee was expected to play an integral part and would be utilised to its fullest.

“We cannot escape the fact that it is important as far as the technical departments of national teams are concerned and we cannot afford to continue sidelining it. Their first task will be to present a detailed report on the failed Warriors campaign and also meet the coach, Ian Gorowa,” said Gwesela.

The high performance technical committee’s duties also include recommending strategies to be used and identify players for the various representative national sides.
