Zifa officials no show at Chibuku final

DESPITE the Chibuku Super Cup winners earning the right to represent Zimbabwe in the Caf Confederations Cup, Zifa officials were absent at the final played at Baobab Stadium in Mhondoro on Saturday.

There was a national team assignment in Harare on the same day and Zifa spokesman Xolisani Gwesela said their officials were committed at the international friendly.

“Remember we had a game on the day. Zifa did not snub the Chibuku Super Cup final, but was committed. Besides, we had (PSL chairman) Peter Dube there,” said Gwesela.

Dube is a Zifa executive committee member, but attended Saturday’s final under the auspices of the PSL.

Ngezi Platinum Stars lifted the trophy with a convincing 3-1 win over FC Platinum in a poorly attended final.

While the atmosphere inside the stadium was jovial, the sponsors would have been worried by the poor attendance, which ranks among the worst in the history of local football.

The final was also watched by PSL chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele, former PSL chairman Twine Phiri, the Delta management led by marketing executive Max Karombo, Bulawayo City FC chairman Jerry Sibanda and the Caps United technical staff, who were probably on a spying mission.

Caps United take on Ngezi Platinum in their next league match and could lift the title at Baobab Stadium if they win the match and FC Platinum and Highlanders play to a draw.
