THE celebrated arts ensemble, Inkululeko Yabatsha School of Arts (Iyasa), a regular feature at national events, continues to reap the benefits of performing at Independence Galas.

As the group celebrates its silver jubilee this year, they are set to take the stage once again at the 2025 Independence Gala on the eve of April 18 at Nembudziya Government High School in Gokwe North, Midlands Province.

Since the early 2000s, when national galas became a key feature of Zimbabwe’s cultural calendar, Iyasa has been among the pioneering acts – sharing the stage with legends such as Black Umfolosi, the late Cde Chinx, Nicholas Zacharia, Alick Macheso, Sandra Ndebele and the late statesman, Eliot Manyika.

Iyasa director, Nkululeko Dube acknowledges the immense impact of these galas on the group’s growth. He recalled their debut at the 2001 Umdala Wethu Gala in Bulawayo, which honoured the late Vice President, Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo.

“We take great pride in being part of these galas because they allow us to express ourselves through music and dance. When we started Iyasa in 2000, we were just young artistes with a dream to make a living from our craft and inspire future generations,” said Dube.

“When galas were introduced, we were invited to perform at the first-ever edition in Bulawayo and were tasked with creating a set-piece depicting the life of the late Vice President Nkomo. At the time, we were still finding our feet, so it was both an honour and a challenge. However, we worked hard and gave it our all, and I believe that’s when the nation recognised us as a group worthy of becoming gala regulars.”

Since then, Iyasa has headlined numerous national events, gaining recognition both locally and internationally. Dube credits the Galas for elevating the group’s profile, which has led to long-term brand partnerships and corporate endorsements.

“If it weren’t for these galas, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Everywhere we go, people associate us with our performances at national events. These platforms have also opened doors for corporate gigs and to this day, we continue to benefit from the exposure we gained.”

Over the years, Iyasa has groomed performers who have gone on to achieve great success, further strengthening their legacy in the arts sector. Notable alumni include Sandra Ndebele, who is now a Ward 20 councillor in Bulawayo, celebrated vocalist Noma Nkwali and Phibion Ncube, who now directs the award-winning Ezimnyama Dance Ensemble – another group that has become a staple at national galas.

For this year’s Independence Gala, Iyasa has promised a unique performance, introducing fresh routines while maintaining their signature Banolila dance style.

“For over two decades, we’ve been known for our signature performances, but for Nembudziya, we’re bringing something different. Our latest routines blend traditional dance, Amarabi, and urban dance moves, which have been well received at recent events,” said Dube.

“We’re always prepared, and at the Independence Gala, people should expect fireworks as we celebrate our culture and identity as Zimbabweans.”

Beyond the gala, the Independence Day celebrations will feature exciting sporting action, with Simba Bhora and FC Platinum entertaining crowds during the main anniversary, while Herentals Queens and Black Rhinos will clash during the 2025 Children’s Party.
