Zim, Angola army ties set to grow

VISITING Chief of Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces General Geraldo Sachipengo Nunda has pledged to further strengthen the cordial relations enjoyed by the two countries’ armies through cooperation in various areas. After a familiarisation tour of the Zimbabwe Military Academy (ZMA) in Gweru yesterday, Gen Nunda said his country was considering increasing cooperation with Zimbabwe.Gen Nunda said his country and Zimbabwe enjoyed cordial relations dating back to the days of the liberation struggle.

He commended military training facilities at the ZMA saying they met international standards.

ZMA Commandant Colonel Steven Gwekwerere said Zimbabwe and Angola enjoyed cordial relations.

He said the two countries had also worked together in various areas in the region as well as internationally.

During his visit to the ZMA, Gen Nunda inspected a quarter guard and was briefed on the academy’s training activities as well as its role in the country’s armed forces.

The Angolan general and his team were accompanied by the Conducting Officer Major-General Engelbert Rugeje.

Gen Nunda and his delegation arrived in the country over the weekend.

He visited the Zimbabwe National Army headquarters in Harare on Monday where he had a Joint Guard of Honour with Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces, General Constantino Guveya Chiwenga.

He later paid a courtesy call at the ZDF offices where a presentation was made on the organisation and the roles of the Ministry of Defence.

In April last year, a 10-member delegation from the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) met President Mugabe at his Munhumutapa offices to share notes on the two countries’ experiences since the attainment of independence.

The delegation was led by MPLA secretary-general Cde Juliao Mateus Paulo.
