ZIMBABWE have launched an ambitious bid to host the biannual International Korfball Federation Under-21 Junior Championship Cup scheduled for March 2017. The tournament will be held in Africa for the first time and four other countries — South Africa, Zambia, Cote d’Ivoire, and Ghana — have submitted their bids to the IKF.Zimbabwe Korfball Federation’s National Development Officer, Percyledge Samugadza, said the bid came after Zimbabwe saw it necessary to host the tournament since previously the local teams did not manage to go to one of the games two years back due to some financial constraints and yet they have been doing outstanding performances.
“Last year, the Under-23 side qualified for the international games held in Belgium, but they failed to go due to resource shortages.
“The Zimbabwe Korfball Federation sent their bid to host the games since the local teams are performing well and it will be a waste to see the talent being thrown away.
“And we are hoping that this time they will have the opportunity to participate in the IKF games hence the application,” Samugadza said.
Zimbabwe are preparing for the 2017 Cup, although they are on a break until the school term is over and will resume training on November 19.
There are going to be 45 players in camp, which was divided into two, one in Mutare and the other in Harare and the squad will be trimmed to 20 players.
