Zim boxers head for Namibia

Most boxers in the country have been getting fights in Namibia and the quartet has joined the great trek to Windhoek where purses have kept locals going.

Mordicai Donga’s Big Fish Boxing Promotions organised the fights for the boxers.

Former Tshaka Gym boxer Donga confirmed the fights.

“As you know I started boxing in Bulawayo and became a champion. Now that I have retired, I am contributing to the sport by organising fights for local boxers. This time around I am taking boxers from outside Bulawayo and they will fight on 28 July.

“My stable Mordicai Donga Big Fish Boxing Promotions, looks forward to organising professional bouts for local boxers in Namibia because we have good contacts there,” Donga said.

The Zimbabwe Boxing Board of Control secretary-general Patrick Mukondiwa also confirmed that they had cleared the boxers for the Namibia bouts.

“It is true that Donga came to us seeking clearances for four boxers and we have cleared them.

“They should be leaving the country on Tuesday,” Mukondiwa said.

This means that the boxers will only have Thursday and Friday to acclimatise in Namibia after enduring a 2 000km road journey and this might affect their performances.

Most of the pugilists that have fought in Namibia have in most cases lost their bouts leaving questions on the quality of Zimbabwe’s professional boxers.

Donga conceded that local boxers at times go for bouts ill-prepared.

“I think some of our boxers go there without proper preparations. However, we tell them in advance to prepare and at times when we visit their training bases we find them busy and we believe they are ready only to go down in Namibia.

“I think the corporate world has to come in so that they help these pugilists as they prepare and stakeholders must come together so that we get the best facilities for our boys,” Donga said.

Some of the boxers from Bulawayo that have been to Namibia courtesy of Donga’s stable include Dumezweni Ntuliki, Ntando Sibanda and Martin Tshuma.

According to Donga, Ngulube and Sibanda will in September fight in Namibia.
