THE country’s 10 provinces are ready for the Sizinda South Beer Garden Boxing tournament set for Saturday in Bulawayo’s sprawling suburb.

The competition is part of the national association’s selections events lined up to select the best boxers to represent the country at next year’s events.

“Ten provinces plus the Zimbabwe National Army will take part in the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation tournament on 4 and 5 November, with over 200 boxers expected to participate. The local pugilists will use the competition to fine tune for international events, which include the World Championships in India next month. Boxers will take part in three categories, juniors, youths and elite up to 40 years,” said Steven Masiyambumbi, the ZBF technical director.

The sport is struggling to find sponsorship and Highlanders’ treasurer Donald Ndebele, the owner of Sizinda South Beer Garden, will sponsor the event.

“We have no sponsors; we are working with Ndebele, the owner of Sizinda South Beer Garden who assists us financially. Arrangements have been made to send the list of participants and what is left is the camp for boxers,” said Masiyambumbi.

He said they had chosen Sizinda as a venue because it always drew large crowds for boxing tournaments.

“We have realised that Sizinda is a good venue. The turnout has been good and we get support from the community. Our aim is to take boxing to every community in Bulawayo and return to the days where boxing was a top sport in Bulawayo. We still believe we can go back to those days. We would like to thank the owner of the venue for being supportive,” Masiyambumbi said.
