THE Zimbabwe Olympic Committee will today hold several activities at Chitungwiza Town Centre as part of Olympic Day celebrations.

Olympic Day is celebrated on June 23 annually.

While yesterday marked this year’s edition of the Olympic Day, ZOC are having their celebrations today.

This year’s theme is”‘Let’s Move” which aims to inspire people around the world to make time for daily physical activity.

ZOC executive board member and chairperson for ZOC Sport, Active Society, Culture and Volunteers Commission Stonard Mapfumo confirmed they will be having their event today.

“We are going to be holding our Olympic Day celebrations here in Zimbabwe on the 24th of June, which is Saturday (today) at the Chitungwiza Town Centre where we are actually going to be moving with one of the pillars of the Olympic movement, which is, let’s move, which we are using to create a global campaign and call to action in terms of exercising.

“We are looking at it as a way of mobilising the world to move on Olympic Day and beyond, everywhere and everyday so that we actually create an active society.

“The goal is to have a society that exercises so that we reduce the incidents of non-communicable diseases, which actually also leads to the reduction of the country’s health bill,” said Mapfumo.

The celebrations will kick off with a 10km race and a 5km fun run. Several sport codes are also set to be part of today’s celebrations.

“Within the space of what we will be doing, we are also going to be having sporting disciplines that are actually going to be participating.

“The likes of softball will be taking part, athletics, netball, karate, volleyball, wrestling, taekwondo, table tennis, tag ball, handball, boxing, tennis, (and) gymnastics.

“All these will actually be participating in making sure that we move as sporting people and we are also showcasing our skills out there.

“We are also going to have the Zimbabwe Republic Police participating and creating awareness on various social issues and other issues that actually happen within the communities as we are moving the Olympic values.

“So I am actually appealing and calling all those who are close to Chitungwiza Town Centre to come, have fun with us on the Olympic Day and help us celebrate the international Olympic Day,” said Mapfumo.
