SIKANDAR Raza says representing Zimbabwe remains the highest honour of his career after reaffirming his commitment to national duty despite the growing demands and financial rewards of global franchise cricket.
The experienced all-rounder, who missed Zimbabwe’s historic Test triumph over Bangladesh last week, has returned to the Chevrons set-up ahead of the ODI series against the same opponents, which begins today at Harare Sports Club.Raza’s availability provides a major boost to Chevrons’ white-ball squad as they seek to build on the momentum generated by their Test success.
The 40-year-old has been one of the most sought-after Zimbabwean players on the global franchise circuit.
But he insists wearing national colours remains his priority.
Raza revealed he made a commitment to Zimbabwe Cricket and supporters that he would always make himself available for white-ball assignments while managing his Test workload because of his packed schedule.
“I hold my international commitments, especially with Zimbabwe, very high,” said Raza.“I made a promise that I will not miss a white-ball game. When it comes to Test cricket, I will play whatever fixtures we have, but probably half of them because it will be very difficult for me to play eight to 10 Test matches, or even six Tests in a year.
“I said I will be available for three of them.”
Despite watching from the sidelines as Zimbabwe secured their Test victory over Bangladesh, Raza said seeing the team succeed in his absence was a proud moment. To see the team win without me makes me happy as well,” he said.
“But since I made that promise with Zimbabwe Cricket and the fans that I will not miss a white-ball game, as much as it is sad to miss some opportunities, I am actually happy that I am going to represent my country.
“For me, that is the ultimate honour.”
Raza’s international commitments have sometimes forced him to balance opportunities in franchise cricket, including his involvement with Worcestershire, but the all-rounder maintained that Zimbabwe comes first.
“Hopefully, when the opportunity comes and Worcester want me back, I will come back in a heartbeat,” he added.Zimbabwe will be hoping Raza’s experience, leadership and all-round ability can inspire them as they shift focus from the longer format to the ODI series against Bangladesh.
