The year 2013 saw the rise of dancehall music and with it saw the ascendancy into the limelight of many artistes who claimed a fair share of the fan base among youths from mainly the ghettos of Zimbabwean towns and cities. In early December last year, a show dubbed “King of the Dancehall” contest was held in which the most popular male and female artistes were voted by the crowd to take home prizes ranging up to R10 000 each.
The Mbare-based trio of Soul Jah Love, Seh Calaz and Kinna went on to grab the top prize, with female chanter Bounty Lisa, also representing Mbare, scooping the top award for dancehall queen on a night graced by Jamaican star Turbulence as a special guest.
Few people knew that Soul Jah Love aka Soul Musaka, and Bounty Lisa aka Lynet Musenyi, were in actual fact husband and wife in real life. The newly-crowned King and Queen of Zim dancehall met in 2011 at Critical Beatz Studio in Chitungwiza, and their love has blossomed ever since, resulting in a formal ceremony of marriage six months ago.
The Herald Entertainment caught up with the couple and asked them how it feels to be a celebrity couple and if fame had affected their relationship in any way.
“It’s a blessing to be a celebrity couple and also good that your partner is loved by so many people whilst knowing that deep in their heart they only love you for who you are,” said Soul Jah Love.
The issue of jealousy does not seem to bother the couple, with instances of temptations an almost daily occurrence especially when “groupies” throw themselves at the feet of celebrities.
“We know our love is strong because makonzo akamboedza kutipesanisa asi takama firita,” added Bounty Lisa.
The royal couple have recorded songs together and have promised an album together in this year, with collaborations with fellow artistes, also on the cards.
Mr and Mrs Musaka are currently expecting their first child together and their excitement can be detected on their faces as they talk about family matters.
At the moment, the couple is staying in Cranborne but they admitted that they spend most of their in the ghettos where they grew up and also where they get their inspiration and where most of their fans come from.
