ZIMBABWE has the potential to prosper and all that is required is for Zimbabweans to play a leading role, US Ambassador to Zimbabwe Bruce Wharton has said.
The ambassador said this while addressing scores of villagers at the commissioning of a dip tank and a dam in Muchemi Village in Binga District recently.
Ambassador Wharton said Zimbabwe’s future was in the hands of Zimbabweans who should work to grow their economy.
The US diplomat said the construction of the dam and the dip tank were a clear demonstration of the capacity of Zimbabweans to move towards a prosperous future.
“While we remain committed to helping those requiring emergency needs, we’re also focused on helping communities move away from short term food assistance and advance towards long term food security. Zimbabwe’s future is in the hands of Zimbabweans.
“The US is very proud to be a partner of this endeavour with the people of Binga. It’s truly a significant achievement,” said Ambassador Wharton.
The US supported the construction of the dam and dip tank through the World Food Programme and Lead Trust.
Through the World Food Programme, the US is providing food assistance to nearly 130,000 people across eight of Zimbabwe’s food insecure districts.
“Last year the US provided $10 million to the World Food Programme in Zimbabwe which was used to fund such projects we’re celebrating here today. We seek to help communities move away from needing emergency assistance and make progress towards sustained development,” said Ambassador Wharton.
Chief Sinansengwe said the dip tank and water reservoir would assist his community in a significant way.
“We expect to increase our income when we sell healthy livestock as they’re going to access water and a dip tank nearby,” said Chief Sinansengwe.
