Zim joins global clean up day

TODAY Zimbabwe joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Clean-Up Day, with campaigns lined across the country.

As part of the proceedings, Monavale and Sherwood communities, together with other people from surrounding communities, have embarked on a clean-up campaign organised by the Harare City Council in conjunction with Environment Management Authority (EMA).

The clean-up started yesterday and will continue today. Speaking at yesterday’s clean-up campaign in Harare, Sherwood community coordinator, Mr Briggs Bhomba, said they were complementing Government’s efforts to ensure a clean environment that is free from diseases.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to clean our environment, society must embrace hygiene and ensure that we are living in a clean environment. We must practice good environmental and waste management through increased advocacy, education, training, and awareness on the issue,” he said.

This year’s theme is “Let’s remove all illegal dumping sites in our communities”.

The clean-up campaign initiative is aimed at creating a cleaner and healthier environment to fight diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

On December 5, 2018, President Mnangagwa declared the first Friday of every month a National Environment Cleaning Day and all citizens are expected to clean their surroundings between 8 am and 10 am.

The President has been leading by example since then.

The clean-up campaigns have largely helped in conscientising individuals and organisations on the importance of cleaning up the country.
