DESPITE financial challenges, the Zimbabwe junior squash team is determined to represent the country in the inter-provincial tournament starting tomorrow and ending on June 19 in South Africa.
A total of 41 talented young athletes will participate in different age groups across diverse cities in South Africa.
The Under-13 boys will compete in East London, while the Under-14 boys and girls will play in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth). The Under-16 boys and girls will be based in Pretoria, while the U-19 teams will go to Cape Town.
The team was selected through provincial trials, the Zimbabwe Championship, and squad training.
Junior Squash chairperson at the Squash Rackets Association of Zimbabwe (SRAZ), Boyd Raynars, thanked the sponsors, including Safeguard, Shades ahead, St Elmo’s, Tortoise Transport IEG, and Belgravia Sports Club for their support in the development of young athletes.
He also acknowledged parents’ dedication to their children’s participation despite financial constraints.
“Despite the financial constraints, our parents have shown remarkable dedication, shouldering a significant portion of the costs to ensure that their children’s participation is guaranteed. We appreciate their unwavering support and dedication to the teams. We wish our teams the very best and look forward to their triumphant return,” he said.
Zimbabwe Junior Squash secretary, Nishyto Munyoro, urged the players to make their country proud and emphasised the importance of learning and growth.
“Remember that success is not just about winning, but about learning, growing, and making your country proud. You have already shown that you have what it takes to excel at the highest level, and we have no doubt that you will make a significant impact in the tournament,” said Munyoro.
