ZIMBABWE’S seven karatekas begin their medal challenge at the seventh JKS World Shoto Cup in Vitória, Brazil, today after securing their places in South Africa.

The biennial championship at Tancredão Gymnasium has attracted delegations from more than 50 countries across five continents. It was last staged in Tokyo, Japan, in 2024.

Coach Shepherd Ziwira said the team began preparing in May and had benefited from arriving in Brazil early.

“We are more than ready for the challenge and confident in all our athletes,” he said. “We trained hard after winning the slots in South Africa. Travelling early gave us time to acclimatise and settle.

“We have seasoned campaigners, and most of our athletes have international experience.”

Ziwira and Natalie Toweel are coaching the team. The Zimbabwean competitors are Tanyaradzwa Ziwira, Lovemore Mutune, Lucky Dube, Zvikomborero Moyo, Lanceburg Mawachi, Juliet Whitaker and Aiden Ziwira.
