Zimbabwe bought digital transmission equipment worth $6 million using part of a $125 million facility signed between the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe and China’s Huawei International.
The equipment, some of which is already in the country, will be used for migration from analogue to digital broadcasting as set by the International Telecommunications Union.
While confirming that Zimbabwe would not be switching on to digital transmission today as required by the ITU, Transmedia chief executive officer, Mrs Florence Sigudu-Matambo, yesterday said the country had already taken delivery of part of the equipment while some was coming.
The equipment is being installed at various sites throughout the country.
Addressing journalists who toured some of the installation sites and a warehouse where the equipment is being stored, BAZ chief executive officer, Mr Obert Muganyura, said Zimbabwe had faced a number of challenges migrating to digital transmission.
He said the economic sanctions imposed on the country were causing challenges in wiring money to equipment suppliers.
