SHAKIB Al Hasan became the third cricketer in Test history to score a century and take 10 wickets in a match.

His performance at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna proved influential in Bangladesh’s 162-run win over Zimbabwe, on the last day of the second Test match yesterday.

Shakib picked up five wickets for 44 runs in the second innings to suffocate Zimbabwe to 151 all out, and helped Bangladesh move into an unassailable 2-0 series win.

After resuming the final day on 201 runs for five wickets, Bangladesh declared its second innings on 248 for nine, just before the end of the morning session after leg spinner Natsai M’shangwe took four wickets for Zimbabwe in the session. He finished with four for 82.

Mohammad Mahmudullah made 71, Mominul Haque 54 and Shuvagata Hom posted his maiden Test half century for Bangladesh before captain Mushfiqur Rahim declared.

Needing to score 314 runs to win or bat 68 overs to draw the match, Zimbabwe’s run-chase got off to the worst possible starts as they lost three wickets for just 15 runs at the top, with openers Brian Chari (0) and Sikandar Raza Butt (9), then captain Brendan Taylor (0) failing to contend with the spin challenge they faced.

Only Hamilton Masakadza offered resistance, following up his career-best 158 runs in the first innings with 61 in the second. The next highest scorers were middle-order batsmen Regis Chakabva with 27 and Craig Ervine on 21.

The third Test is at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong, starting on Wednesday.
