SOUTH African police in Limpopo province have launched a murder investigation after a Zimbabwean man was allegedly killed in a mob attack in Lefara Village, Maake, on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Limpopo police spokesperson, Colonel Malasela Ledwaba, officers were alerted to the incident and rushed to the scene where they found community members gathered around an injured man lying on the ground.
“Police were summoned to Lefara Village regarding a mob attack incident. Members immediately proceeded to the scene, where they found community members gathered around an unknown male lying on the ground with serious injuries,” said Col Ledwaba.
Emergency medical services were called, and the injured man was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Before being admitted, police were able to speak to the victim, who was identified as a Zimbabwean national residing in Bridgeway Village.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the man was assaulted by community members who accused him of stealing electric cables.
Col Ledwaba said the victim later succumbed to the injuries the same evening while receiving treatment at the hospital, where emergency medical personnel certified him dead.
Police have since opened a murder docket and appealed to the public to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible.
