ZIMBABWE golfers are keen to make a mark at the 34th edition of the World Amateur Team Championships, which tees off today at the Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore.
The 72-hole tournament, which is being hosted by the Singapore Golf Association runs until Saturday.
Playing from the 10th tee, Darlington Chikanyambidze will go first at 8.21am followed by Munesu Chimhini who will be followed by Elton Zulu from Bindura Golf Club. South Africa and Morocco are the only other African countries in the 36-team field on the draw. Head of delegation Blessmore Gandawa, who is also the Zimbabwe Golf Association president said: “We are here with a young team, all participating for the first time and it is an opportunity for them to learn more. “They are in high spirits and raring to go.” During a practice round on hole number 6, Chikanyambidze hit a hole in one and if he carries this swing into the actual tournament, Zimbabwe will be up on the leaderboard after the four rounds.
Gandawa added, “We tried by all means to do much research and seek as much information as possible. “Being of national interest we have tried to gather as much information on how to approach this course including the Scott brothers, who play on the Asian Tour and have played on this course before.”
The youngest of Team Zimbabwe is Chimhini, who at just 14 is already making waves. “Here we are and we are here to make history. “We are ready to give it our best shot. We know Zimbabweans are fighters and we are here to show up to the plate.
“My teammates have expressed confidence and individually I am also confident that we will deliver.
“We know every Zimbabwean is behind us and this level is different but we will try to make a mark,” said Chimhini.
