Zimbabwe on Monday received 500 tonnes of rice from the Indian Embassy.

The rice was handed over to Deputy Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Minister Paddy Zhanda by Indian ambassador to Zimbabwe Rakshpaul Malhotra.

“The main objective of this donation is to alleviate poverty, reduce food and nutrition insecurity in the drier areas of Zimbabwe,” said Deputy Minister Zhanda.

He said India pledged to assist Zimbabwe in the agro-processing sector under the India-Africa Forum Summit.

“The Republic of Zimbabwe had requested the World Food Programme to request support from the government of India as part of its resource mobilisation efforts for its humanitarian programmes. As such, the 500 tonnes provided by India is a response to the government appeal,” he said.
