THE Zimbabwe School of Mines (ZSM) plans to invest $275 000 in building a campus clinic to cater for its students and community, an official has said.
ZSM is a dynamic regional institution that serves the mining industry in the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) region by providing competency-based training for high calibre, hands on technicians.
Chief executive officer, Mr Dzingirai Tusai, said the project was one of the key initiatives by the training institution.
“We are looking at raising around $275 000 for the construction of the campus clinic.
“That is why we hosted a golf tournament and a cocktail party to channel the funds towards the project,” he told Business Chronicle.
“Wellness is very important to us and a clinic will serve students who stay on campus, the staff and the local community will also benefit. Also, since we have foreign students on our campus, they are also going to benefit because their health will be taken into consideration.”
Mr Tusai said as an institution they were encouraging females to take up mining courses. He said ZSM continues to excel and had been invited for regional awards after being nominated by European countries.
“It is a new thing. The news has just reached our office. Other people have recognised the work that we do in the region and it is actually the European countries that have nominated us.
“The United Kingdom through the Oxford University and Spanish universities have nominated us,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Tusai said mining plays an important role in the economy as it was the biggest foreign currency earner.
He stressed the need for innovation, value addition and the creation of an environment that promotes good business.
