All is set for the Zimbabwe Spelling Bee Championship finals today at Mufakose High School with several schools representing different districts taking part. Out of the 240 students who have taken part, only 32 students remain in the grand finale with winners walking away with scholarships, bursaries and uniforms.

Schools that are in the finals include Mukai High School, Glen View 2 Kwayedza, Glen Norah, Kuwadzana High, Mufakose High and Ellis Robins High School.

The tournament, which is sponsored by the Zimbabwe Youth Development Foundation Trust, working hand-in-hand with Zimbabwe United Nations Association (ZUNA), Youth Groups For Global Rights For Network and Development (YGGNRD) and Mandela Washington Fellowship Alumni is meant to send young African students to American Universities for exposure on community development leadership.

Founder member James Bayanai Khaki said the competition will next year be in other parts of the country.

Students are given a list of words that they study as well as knowing their meanings before the date of

the competition. It is meant to improve the vocabulary, communication

and public speaking among the students.

Some students expressed joy over the tournament saying it will help in developing their education. Glen View 2 High School, Form Three student, Tinashe Mandewe said the competition is good but they had little time to practise.

“I am happy to take part in such competition as it boost my confidence. The only problem we faced was of time as we didn’t have much for practice. We only used our free lessons to do some research. I hope today we emerge victors,” he said.

Another contender, Anthony Namakawa from Glen Norah said the Spelling Bee is a good tournament as it allows me to be well versed with a lot of English words.

“It is a tough competition. For a start, I expected to be number one but ended up being number two. It’s a competition either you win or loose. I thank the organisers for such a tremendous show of which schools taking part have learnt some lessons. I have also noticed that the English language should be taken seriously.” said Anthony.
