ZIM TEEN IMPRESSES AT NORWICH

A TEENAGE defender, who can choose to play for the Warriors, is making waves in the English Championship after only making two starts for Norwich City.

Lucien Mahovo, 19, is emerging as the surprise package of the club’s season.

After navigating a nerve-wracking first Championship start against Swansea last weekend, which Norwich won 5-1, the teenager sidestepped the tricky follow-up appearance with aplomb as Norwich beat Watford 1-0 on Saturday.

It was a big call from manager Johannes Hoff Thorup.

Despite Mahovo’s impressive display last weekend, it would have been easy, given the away game and the argument for more senior experience, to dip the youngster out against robust opponents.

The Norwich boss should take credit for showing bravery in handing the 19-year-old the opportunity to step into the Championship arena — but only Mahovo can absorb the praise for the manner in which he has grasped the opportunity with both hands.

Pitted against Moussa Sissoko, a player with 295 Premier League appearances under his belt, Mahovo wasn’t beaten in a one versus one duel throughout the afternoon, winning five on the ground.

Mahovo, who plays as a left-back but is comfortable across the entire defensive line, including as a defensive midfielder, was composed throughout.

One crossfield ball that landed directly onto Oscar Schwartau’s right boot evidenced the quality he has in possession.

There is plenty to like about his profile and what he has produced in his opening two starts.

There is a maturity to his game, but also a balance. He is contributing to the attacking, defensive and possession-based phases of City’s game. — Pink Un.
