Zim to attend telecommunication summit

week, a senior government official said on Saturday.
Founded in 1865, the ITU is a United Nations specialised agency created to spearhead the growth and sustained development of telecommunications and information networks globally.

Currently, the ITU has a membership of 192 countries whom it assists in mobilising the technical, financial and human resources required to fulfil its core mandate.
Private organisations like equipment manufacturers, funding bodies, regional and international telecommunication organisations can also join the agency as sector members.
Information Communication Technology secretary Engineer Sam Kundishora said President Robert Mugabe would lead the delegation.

“Zimbabwe will be sending a delegation headed by the President to Geneva to attend the ITU summit from the 24th to the 27th of this month,” he said.
More than 250 delegates including Heads of State and Government, ministers, city mayors, captains of industry and technology experts are expected to attend.

A major priority of ITU is to bridge the “digital divide” by building adequate and safe information and communication infrastructure.
It also concentrates on strengthening emergency communications for disaster prevention and mitigation, especially in less developed regions.

According to ITU’s annual “Measuring the information society 2011” report, information and communication technology uptake continues to accelerate worldwide, spurred by a steady fall in the price of telephone and broadband internet services.
It ranked South Korea as the world’s most advanced ICT economy followed by Sweden, Iceland, Denmark and Finland. – New Ziana.
