adminZimbabwe will on Saturday join the rest of the African continent in commemorating the Day of the African Child, with President Mnangagwa being the guest of honour at the event in Harare.
This year’s commemorations coincide with the official opening of the 26th Session of the Junior Parliament of Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe Youth Council assistant director (Youth Programming and Public Relations) Mr Tanzikwa Guranungo made the announcement in a statement yesterday.
“On the 16th of June 2018, Zimbabwe joins the rest of the African continent in commemorating Day of the African Child,” he said. “His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to be the guest of honour.”
Mr Guranungo said all the 210 junior parliamentarians were expected to be in Harare today, with elections’ for junior president and cabinet slated for tonight.
He said the junior parliamentarians will attend a capacity-building workshop tomorrow, where Parliament procedures will take place, while on Friday, there will be a full dress rehearsal in preparation for the official opening of Junior Parliament on Saturday.
The Day of the African Child came into being following a declaration by African Union Heads of State, as an important day in commemoration of the 1976 protest by schoolchildren in Soweto, South Africa.
The students protested against an education designed to further the purposes of the apartheid regime.
