THREE Zimbabwe Chess Federation executive members were appointed in the FIDE social chess commission body for the 2022-2026 term.

The trio of Eric Takawira, Fungirayiini Mushaninga and Tapiwa Gora are part of the appointments made by the chess mother board, Chess Federation (FIDE), last week.

Takawira, who is a FIDE trainer and international organiser for the ZCF interim trainers commission chairman, was appointed to serve as a councillor.

The social commission is an arm of FIDE dedicated to using chess as a tool for social development.

Zimbabwe have been one of the leading examples in this regard with its growing and thriving chess in prisons initiative where the country was the only African representative in the intercontinental online chess championships for prisoners back in June.

Takawira is one of four councillors in the commission and shall work with a team of 21 people under this commission.

The current Zimbabwe Chess Federation women’s chess director Mushaninga was appointed into the FIDE technical commission as a member.

Mushaninga, a decorated FIDE Arbiter (FA) and Telecommunications expert, was part of the telecommunications team at the 2022 World Chess Olympiad held in Chennai, India.

Another ZCF executive member Gora will serve as a “member” of the FIDE disabled commission.

Gora is the current technical and national teams director with the ZCF executive committee.

The FIDE president, Arkady Dvorkovich, underscored the crucial role of the FIDE Commissions is servicing Federations, improving technical capacity and accomplishing FIDE social goals.

The ZCF acting president, Muchakanakirwa Mkanganwi, was elated with these appointments and went on to congratulate the trio.

“This is an honour for our country. The experience they will gain there will in no doubt help us to develop our own Commissions to a world class level. This is a massive development,” said Mkanganwi.
