ZIMBABWEAN power-lifters Godwin Mhaka, Waseem Kuraweley and Spiwe Munyaka each won gold at the 2026 United World Sports and Fitness Federation Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand, at the weekend.
Munyaka began Zimbabwe’s medal haul last Friday by winning the women’s under-90kg full power-lifting category.
The Kwekwe-based athlete was also named overall women’s champion after impressing in the ladder deadlift.
Mhaka won the under-125kg full power-lifting category and was named the tournament’s best power-lifter, while Kuraweley took gold in the under-85kg deadlift.
The Zimbabweans competed against athletes from 14 countries, including Great Britain, Australia, India, Pakistan, the US, South Africa, Iran and hosts Thailand.
Mhaka, who also served as coach and team leader, credited hard work and the support the team received.
“I am happy to have won another power-lifting accolade. It is all through hard work,” he said.
“Body-building and power-lifting are individual sports that need personal support, and I am grateful to everyone who made this trip a success.
“Missing some contests last year gave me the courage to work hard for this tournament, and the results speak for themselves.
“The competition was tough, especially considering the number of athletes we came up against, but we pulled through.
“We are looking forward to more support as we seek to enter more global tournaments this year.”
Mhaka also won the 2025 Mr Universe title.
