Zimbabwe athletics coach earns his stripes

Zimbabwe athletics coach Aaron Whyte has attained new heights for the local sport and himself after World Athletics made him a course marker (Measurer).

This will serve Zimbabwe athletics well as many local routes for long distances may be attested into a list recognised by World Athletics.

Once recognised, they may be recognised as official for events such as the World Half Marathon, World Championships (Marathon), Commonwealth and Olympic Games qualifying routes.

Once a course is certified by the world body, it may attract athletes from all over the world, thereby supporting sports tourism.

Whyte’s achievement was confirmed by World Athletics Road Running Manager Benjamin Roux.

The Zimbabwean completed a course on the subject in Namibia last year.

“This is not a personal achievement – this is for Zimbabwe. It means our country now has an officially certified specialist who can ensure our races meet global standards. I’m deeply honoured, and this motivates me to serve our nation and continent even more passionately,” said Whyte.

His accomplishment is at Grade C and he is expected to progress to the next stage, which is Grade B, which may see him mark major races worldwide.

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe boss Tendai Tagara welcomed Whyte’s milestone.

“We celebrate coach Whyte not just for his outstanding journey but for elevating Zimbabwean athletics into global technical standards,” said NAAZ President Mr Tendai Tagara.
