Zimbabwe has commended tremendous efforts by the United Nations and its arms in supporting peace operations across the world at a time when the world is grappling with various security challenges affecting the socio-economic advancement of humanity.
Addressing member states during the fourth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS) held this week at UN headquarters in New York, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe reiterated Zimbabwe’s commitment, under the leadership of President Mnangagwa, to peace and security as a key enabler of sustainable development.
Minister Kazembe encouraged member states to utilise regional and bilateral cooperation as critical avenues of strengthening peace and security.
“The Republic of Zimbabwe remains committed to the ideals of the United Nations premised on peace and shall continue working with institutions such as the United Nations Police and International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) in such efforts,” he said.
“In the same manner, as a global family, we have set ourselves the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) whose success is premised on peace and stability. As such, it is important that we strive towards ensuring peace and security as a way to guarantee the attainment of these important developments.

“In this regard, the role of the United Nations Peace Operations cannot be ignored or taken lightly. I am happy to report our commitment as a country to these activities which has seen us contributing personnel to various peacekeeping missions in Africa and abroad.”
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the Summit is an important opportunity to drive the work of United Nations Police and realise their full potential.
The Summit was running under the theme “Advancing our Common Security: UN Policing for a New Era.”
It brought together representatives of member states, regional and international professional policing organisations.
