ZIMBABWEAN distance runners made a powerful statement at the 2025 Durban International Marathon on Sunday, grabbing three podium finishes in a show of grit, pace, and rising ambition.
In a field stacked with East African elites, Zimbabwe’s Godwin Katakura, Blessing Waison, and Fortunate Chidzivo flew the flag high with stand-out performances that signalled the nation’s growing presence on the continental road-running circuit.
Katakura led the charge in the men’s marathon, finishing second in an impressive 2:11:02. Just be-hind him was compatriot Waison, who claimed third place in 2:11:51.
The race was won by Kenya’s Felix Kiprotich in 2:10:45, but the Zimbabwean duo’s presence on the podium was a clear statement of intent.
In the women’s marathon, Fortunate Chidzivo delivered another solid performance, crossing the line in 2:33:30 to finish third behind Ethiopia’s Emane Seifu Hayile (2:31:45) and Namibia’s Alina Armas (2:32:34).
Now in its fifth edition, the Durban International Marathon attracted elite runners from across the continent. But it was Zimbabwe’s performance that turned heads, particularly given the field’s depth and near-perfect race day conditions.
Katakura and Waison were in the mix from the start, sticking with the lead pack before powering through the final stretch. Though Kiprotich surged ahead at the 18km mark to claim victory, the Zimbabwean pair showed grit and composure to stay on the podium in one of Africa’s toughest marathon tests.
In the women’s race, Chidzivo continued her steady rise on the international stage, holding her pace and rhythm against some of the continent’s best.
Her podium finish, built on experience and relentless work ethic, cements her growing reputation among Africa’s top female marathoners. The event also featured a 10km race celebrating local South African talent, but for Zimbabwe, the spotlight firmly belonged to the 42.2km main event and its breakthrough stars.
While Kenya and Ethiopia have long dominated distance running, Zimbabwe’s performance at this year’s marathon hints at a promising shift.
With continued support and international exposure, athletes like Katakura, Waison, and Chidzivo are setting the tone for what could be a golden era for Zimbabwean road running.
