ZIMBABWE has joined the global commemoration of World IVF Day, spotlighting how assisted reproductive technologies are transforming lives by turning despair into parenthood for hundreds of families.
Under the theme “Celebrating Science, Hope and the Journey to Parenthood,” the observance highlights not only medical breakthroughs but also the human resilience behind them.
In a statement, IVF Zimbabwe Doctor Tinovimba Mhlanga said 422 IVF babies were born to date.
He said lVF is more than clinical science and is deeply human.
“Science is the foundation of IVF, but hope is its heartbeat,” he said.
“Every embryo transferred, every pregnancy achieved and every baby born is a reminder that science is not abstract but deeply human.”
Dr Mhlanga emphasised that couples often endure years of disappointment and discrimination before seeking help.
“Some face years of disappointment, stigma or even discrimination before seeking help.
“World IVF Day is about honouring that journey, recognising the strength it takes and celebrating the science that makes new beginnings possible,” he said.
Dr Mhlanga reflected on how IVF restores dignity and dismantles stigma in societies where childlessness can lead to isolation.
“When a mother tells us that IVF gave her a second chance at life, we are reminded that our work is not just about medicine.
“It is about humanity and rewriting narratives of despair into stories of hope,” he said.
He highlighted that IVF is no longer a luxury for the wealthy but is increasingly affordable and accessible.
“Once seen as a luxury for the wealthy, IVF in Zimbabwe has become increasingly affordable,” he said.
“This accessibility embodies the spirit of the day, showing that science should serve all people, not just a privileged few.”
