The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has reaffirmed its commitment to child rights protection and ethical media conduct, reiterating its call for journalists to promote ethical journalism and safeguard the rights and welfare of children through responsible media reportage.
In a statement on Monday, the Commission emphasised that children constitute a vulnerable group deserving special protection from media practices that may expose them to harm, stigma, exploitation or psychological distress.
“Media coverage involving minors must therefore be guided by professionalism, sensitivity and adherence to established ethical standards,” said the Commission.
“ZMC reminds media practitioners and media institutions that reporting on matters involving children must uphold the principles of dignity, privacy and the best interests of the child at all times.
“The disclosure of identifying information, images or details that may compromise a child’s safety or wellbeing is inconsistent with ethical journalism practices and the Commission does not condone such.”
ZMC reminded media organisations and all media practitioners to ensure that the identity of children involved in sensitive cases is protected, reportage on children avoids sensationalism or intrusive coverage, content involving minors is handled with accuracy, fairness and compassion, and ethical codes of conduct governing child-sensitive reporting are strictly observed.
In addition, the Commission said it will continue to engage stakeholders in strengthening awareness of responsible reporting and compliance with professional media standards in line with national and international child protection frameworks.
It also encouraged members of the public to report any instances of unethical media conduct involving children through the Commission’s official communication platforms.
“Responsible reporting protects children’s rights and upholds public trust in the media,” said the Commission.
