THE Zimbabwe National Karate Federation are set to field a five-member team at the upcoming African Championships.
The continental showcase runs from September 6 to 13 in Algiers, Algeria.
The championships will feature cadets, juniors, Under-21s and seniors.
Zimbabwe will be represented by Nicole Kadzombe, Clarice Runodada, Trinity Kotsi, Bradley Kadzombe and Raylen Mohamed in the cadet, junior and Under-21 categories.
The national federation joined hands with the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee, who are funding the team’s air tickets.
ZNKF president Joe Rugwete acknowledged the support from ZOC.
“The support is fundamental.
“Without it, frankly, we would not be fielding this contingent.
“Zimbabwe’s sports sponsorship environment remains constrained, and international airfares represent a significant barrier to participation at this level.
“ZOC’s backing allows us to expose young talent to continental-level competition without compromising our domestic programme development. It’s the difference between sending a team and remaining sidelined.
“This is how you build depth in Olympic sports,” Rugwete said.
The team departs for Algeria on September 4.
