Zimbabwe will formally campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027-2028 term, following cabinet approval of the bid strategy, Information Minister Dr. Jenfan Muswere has said.

Speaking at a post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare, Dr. Muswere confirmed the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and African Union (AU) have both endorsed Zimbabwe’s candidature.

“The campaign will be officially launched by His Excellency President E.D. Mnangagwa in Harare and at the 80th UN General Assembly in New York this September,” Dr. Muswere stated. “This bid reaffirms Zimbabwe’s commitment to international peace and security.”

The minister emphasized that successful election to the UNSC would generate significant international goodwill for Zimbabwe. The country last held a non-permanent seat on the Security Council in 1991-1992.

Zimbabwe will compete for one of two African seats available for the 2027-2028 term. The final vote by UN member states is expected in mid-2026.
