Harare, Zimbabwe – TO address food insecurity, the Zimbabwean Government has distributed over 62 000 metric tonnes of grain to vulnerable and food-insecure people across the country’s 8 rural provinces, the Cabinet announced on Monday.
The first three-month distribution blitz, which started in May 2024, is coming to an end this month. Modalities for the second phase, scheduled for August to October 2024, are being worked out, including plans for grain movement, urban cash distribution, and mobilising additional financial resources.
According to the report presented by the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Dr Anxious Masuka, the grain distribution breakdown is as follows:
• Manicaland: 9,050.20 metric tonnes
• Mashonaland Central: 7,844.61 metric tonnes
• Mashonaland East: 6,207.03 metric tonnes
• Mashonaland West: 7,919.99 metric tonnes
• Masvingo: 12,246.18 metric tonnes
• Matabeleland North: 4,248.39 metric tonnes
• Matabeleland South: 5,201.15 metric tonnes
• Midlands: 10,104.95 metric tonnes
Additionally, the Zunde RaMambo/Isiphala Senkosi Strategic Grain Reserve Distribution Programme has collected 3 397.33 metric tonnes of grain to date, while District Development Coordinators in the provinces will coordinate activities for the upcoming Public Works Programme.
The Government’s efforts to mitigate the food deficit and support vulnerable communities are part of its ongoing commitment to ensuring food security and making sure no one goes hungry in the face of the El Nino-induced drought that is affecting many countries.
