Zimbabwe reaffirms democratic integrity, calls for US to address own challenges

Dr Jenfan Muswere

I stand before you today to address recent remarks made by the US Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Pamela M Tremont, regarding our nation’s electoral processes.

It is important to reaffirm that Zimbabwe’s elections are conducted in accordance with our constitutional and legal frameworks. Our people voted through a transparent, fair and democratic process which saw His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa being re-elected.

The decision to lead and govern our country is made by Zimbabweans. The issue of our elections was resolved by Zimbabweans, for Zimbabweans.  We have a robust and independent electoral system that ensures the will of the people is respected. It is a testament to our sovereignty and our commitment to democratic principles that we handle our internal affairs with integrity and dedication.

I would like to remind the US Ambassador that Zimbabwe values its sovereignty and the right to manage its domestic affairs without imperialistic undue interference. I would like the US ambassador to reflect on the 2000 US presidential elections between President George W Bush and Al Gore.

That election was marred by controversy, culminating in a Supreme Court decision that ultimately determined the outcome. The election between President Joe Biden and the former President Donald Trump in 2020 was a complex situation that tested the resilience of American democracy. The former President Trump raised rigging allegations amid reports of domestic terrorism.

However, the United States handled the issue within its own legal and constitutional frameworks, demonstrating the principle that domestic electoral issues should be resolved internally. In this spirit the US cannot be the international electoral board with the responsibility to run elections in Zimbabwe.

It is equally important for our friends in the United States to address their current pressing issues. The rising political violence ahead of the upcoming November elections is a cause for concern not only for the American people but for the global community.

The recent assassination attempt on former President Trump highlights the gravity of the situation and underscores the need for a focused and cohesive effort to ensure peace and stability within the United States.
The former president who is also a presidential candidate is being  dragged to court in what many observers say is tantamount to undemocratic practises.

We believe that in terms of our engagement and re-engagement strategy a stable and peaceful United States is beneficial for the entire world. As such, we urge our American counterparts to concentrate on addressing their internal challenges, fostering unity, and ensuring a safe environment for their candidates and citizens during this critical election period.

Zimbabwe remains committed to maintaining strong, respectful, and mutually beneficial relations with the United States and all nations because we are a friend to all and an enemy to none. We are open to constructive dialogue and co-operation based on mutual respect and understanding. It is important to also note that no amount of external pressure will force Zimbabwe to surrender its sovereignty.
I Thank you.
