ZRP Bulawayo Central Police Station were crowned champions of the Wafa Wafa Inter-Stations Football Tournament after winning 4-1 against Tshabalala Police Station via a penalty shootout at Ross Camp Stadium yesterday.

The two teams had played to a nil all stalemate in regulation time and needed to be separated by the penalty lottery.

Tshabalala will only have themselves to blame as they dominated the entire match but missed numerous chances that came their way.

In the penalty shootout, Bulawayo Central goalkeeper Archford Mokwena was the hero of the day after saving two penalty kicks.

Frank Mpofu, Tavonga Mashora, Tinomuvonga Shoko and Clyvine Ncube were on target for Bulawayo Central while Witness Zuze scored the only spot kick for Tshabalala.

The tournament saw 17 stations participate in the knock-out competition. At the start of the tournament, the bottom two ranked teams played an eliminator which reduced the number of teams to 16, making it even to play knock-out matches.

Mandla Ndlovu, the Townsend and Butcher sponsored ZRP Bulawayo Inter-Stations League chairperson said the competition has been intense, in both the league and cup competition.

“It’s been an exciting year and just like any other league, this is one of the cup tournaments. As much as we play the games to keep police physically and mentally fit, such tournaments help to enhance community policing. We are grateful to Townshend and Butcher for their sponsorship which has run for over 25 years,” said Ndlovu.

The ZRP football league executive also took time to award league winners and runners-up with their prizes for the season. -@innocentskizoe
