FORMER Mashonaland United rightback Jonathan Zhungu who died on Monday morning at the age of 96 will be laid to rest at Athlone Cemetery this morning.
Zhungu was born in Manicaland Province on August 18, 1928. He attended school there.
According to his son Jasper, the former Chiwororo No.2 trained as a builder at Mount Selinda Mission.
After graduating he crossed the Zambezi and worked in Zambia. This is where he started playing more competitive and organised football for a team in the Copperbelt.
“He was born in Manicaland where he was educated and trained as a builder. He then went to Zambia where he played for a team in the Copperbelt before relocating to Bulawayo,” said Jasper.
The elder Chungu played for Eastern Rovers and Mashonaland United.
Eastern Rovers became Eastlands and Mashonaland United the present day Zimbabwe Saints.
While Jasper did not see his dad in action he confirmed that he had while they were growing up seen some medals he had won during his playing days.
Among the people that Zhungu played with is former Vice President of Zimbabwe Joseph Msika and centurian Nevison Majuta Masunda.
Mourners have been gathered at A4 Mzilikazi.
Saints board of trustees chairman Vincent Pamire and club chairman Lloyd Munhanga said they were saddened with the passing on of Zhungu.
