ZIMBABWE sits on a treasure trove of lithium, the “white gold” of the 21st century, holding the world’s fifth-largest deposits of this crucial battery metal. This presents a golden opportunity for the nation to transform into a key player in the global tech industry by attracting mobile phone manufacturers.
Zimbabwe’s lithium wealth is not just plentiful, but also becoming increasingly accessible. The Bravura Consortium’s upcoming production in Kamativi, expected to commence in 2025, is just one example. Additionally, existing Chinese processing plants, like the one commissioned for US$300 million, showcase the country’s potential as a lithium hub.
Beyond its own resources, Zimbabwe can learn valuable lessons from fellow resource-rich nations that have successfully attracted major manufacturers. The “lithium triangle” of Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile, which holds over two-thirds of the world’s lithium reserves, is a prime example. This region has become a magnet for investment in mining and battery production due to its readily available lithium. Similarly, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s cobalt reserves, another essential component in lithium-ion batteries, have enticed global tech giants like Apple and Samsung to source cobalt from the DRC. By creating an attractive environment that mirrors these successful strategies, Zimbabwe can position itself as the next big destination for mobile phone manufacturers.
Beyond its abundant lithium reserves, Zimbabwe can create a compelling offer to attract global mobile phone manufacturers. A history of political stability and a robust legal system that protects investments will give manufacturers the confidence to set up shop in the country. Investing in reliable energy supplies, transportation networks, and communication systems will ensure smooth operations for these manufacturers.
Furthermore, offering tax breaks on import duties for equipment and raw materials, along with streamlined regulatory processes, can significantly reduce production costs and bureaucratic hurdles. Finally, by investing in programmes to train Zimbabweans in the necessary skills for phone manufacturing, the country can create a readily available and qualified workforce, reducing reliance on foreign labour. These measures will make Zimbabwe a more attractive destination for mobile phone manufacturers.
Modern corporations are increasingly prioritising ethical practices throughout their supply chains. Zimbabwe must ensure its lithium mining and processing adhere to strict environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. This can involve implementing measures to minimise environmental impact, ensuring fair labour practices, and upholding strong corporate governance. A commitment to sustainability will be a major selling point for environmentally conscious tech companies looking to source their lithium responsibly.
Zimbabwe’s lithium opportunity goes beyond simply attracting phone manufacturers. The country has the potential to become a regional hub for the entire lithium value chain. This means establishing facilities to process raw lithium into the high-purity form needed for batteries. By doing this, Zimbabwe can capture greater value from its resources and attract companies specialising in battery production itself.
Additionally, encouraging the development of a domestic battery production industry would create additional jobs and position Zimbabwe to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles, another sector reliant on lithium-ion batteries. This comprehensive approach would solidify Zimbabwe’s position as a major player in the lithium economy.
By strategically leveraging its lithium wealth, fostering a business-friendly environment, and prioritising sustainability, Zimbabwe can transform itself into a lithium powerhouse, attracting major mobile phone manufacturers and building a robust lithium ecosystem. This, in turn, will unlock economic prosperity and technological advancement, setting a model for other resource-rich nations to follow.
