ZIMBABWE is set to host a high-level Southern Africa sub-regional meeting on water and sanitation beginning today in Harare, bringing together policymakers, technical experts and development partners to shape the continent’s long-term water security agenda.
The meeting, convened by the African Ministers’ Council on Water, will run for three days under the theme: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”
It is expected to attract more than 80 delegates from across the Southern African region, including representatives from governments, the African union Commission, United Nations agencies and civil society organisations.
The gathering comes at a critical time as African countries move to operationalise the Africa Water Vision 2063, which seeks to deliver universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene services while strengthening climate resilience and sustainable resource management.
According to AMCOW, the Harare meeting will serve as a platform for consultation and coordination, with member states expected to provide input into the First Implementation Plan for the period 2026 to 2033.
Key discussions will focus on improving water availability for growing populations, strengthening sanitation systems and enhancing regional cooperation on shared water resources.
Participants will also review progress on AMCOW’s work programme, budget priorities and upcoming continental initiatives, while nominating member states to serve in policy organs for the 2027 to 2029 cycle.
The meeting follows the adoption of the Africa Water Vision 2063 by African union Heads of State earlier this year, placing increased emphasis on water security as a driver of economic growth, public health and climate adaptation.
Zimbabwe’s hosting of the meeting underscores its growing role in regional water governance and its commitment to advancing sustainable water and sanitation solutions.
Deliberations in Harare are expected to feed into broader continental processes, including preparations for the Africa Water and Sanitation Systems Leadership Symposium scheduled for Kigali, Rwanda, in August.
