ZIMBABWE Emerging is set to play host to South Africa Emerging for a month-long tour which is scheduled to take place at Queens Sports Club, starting at the end of July, Zimpapers Sports Hub can reveal.
The tour is set to run from July 30 to August 21 with all games being played at Queens Sports Club. The confirmation of the tour means that there will be three Zimbabwean teams in action at the same time, the senior men’s national team, Zimbabwe A and Zimbabwe Emerging.
Zimbabwe A is in England while the Chevrons are in Ireland for a one-off Test match. Zimbabwe Emerging and South Africa Emerging will play two four-day matches and three 50-over matches at the city’s ceremonial home of cricket.
A 15-member team for the four-day tour has already been named and is scheduled to go for a weeklong camp in Harare before they make their way to Bulawayo.
They will be under the tutelage of Steve Mangongo. The team will camp in Harare from July 21 to 27 and will be in Bulawayo on July 28. Former Zimbabwe Under-19 skipper, who captained the Junior Chevrons at the 2022 ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup, Emmanuel Bawa is part of the Emerging side for the four-day matches alongside the likes of Alistair Frost, Ryan Kamwemba, Ronak Patel and Tinashe Muchawaya.
Brandon Mavuta, Innocent Kaia, Takudzwanaishe Kaitano, Nick Welch, Antum Naqvi and Carl Mumba are some of the already established names that also made the cut for the Emerging side. This will not be the first time Zimbabwe Emerging and South Africa Emerging face off. In August last year, Zimbabwe toured South Africa for a five-match 50-over series which the latter won 3-2.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe A was handed a heavy defeat on the opening match of their tour of England by Kent County Cricket Club Second XI on Tuesday. The visitors, who are under the stewardship of Elton Chigumbura lost the match by 111 runs (D/L Method).
Zimbabwe A won the toss and elected to field first and managed to restrict Kent Second XI to 262/9 before they went on to crumble to 129/8 in 45 overs. They were chasing a revised target of 241 runs in 45 overs. Newman Nyamhuri led from the front with the ball for Zimbabwe A, taking three wickets for 46 runs in 10 overs while Trevor Gwandu and Owen Muzondo took two scalps apiece. Mgcini Dube and Wessly Madhevere were the other wicket takers.
In their chase, Tanunurwa Makoni top scored for Zimbabwe A with 37 runs off 44 deliveries while Nyamhuri finished unbeaten on 33 runs off 88 balls. Muzondo scored an unbeaten 27 runs from 85 balls. They will be back in action today against Lancashire Second XI.
