ZIMBABWEAN-born, Randburg-based rapper Lil Mars Shex is ready to usher in a new chapter in his musical journey with the release of his highly anticipated debut extended play (EP), Bandz Up, scheduled for July 24, just two days after he celebrates his 25th birthday.
For the artiste born Marshal Ncube in Bulawayo, the five-track project represents more than simply adding another release to his catalogue. It is a personal statement of resilience, ambition and transformation as he seeks to establish himself among Southern Africa’s emerging independent hip-hop voices.

Having relocated to Randburg, Johannesburg, where he has steadily built his career, Lil Mars Shex believes Bandz Up captures the experiences of a young creative navigating life between his Zimbabwean roots and the opportunities of South Africa’s competitive music industry.
The EP, his first full-length project to be distributed through Ditto Music, follows the release of his 2026 singles South Side and Too Clean Too Fresh, songs that introduced audiences to his melodic trap sound while laying the groundwork for what he hopes will become his breakthrough year.
Describing the project as a fresh beginning, the rapper said Bandz Up reflects the mindset that has carried him from Bulawayo to Johannesburg.
“Bandz Up is my reset. It’s about hustle, manifestation and stepping into a better life. From Bulawayo to Randburg, this is the soundtrack to going harder,” he said.

The EP is executive produced by his long-time collaborator CQ Blessing, whose production brings together polished trap percussion, smooth R&B-inspired chord progressions, melodic Auto-Tuned hooks and laid-back rhythms designed to resonate with both streaming audiences and the fast-paced world of short-form digital content.
Together, the duo have crafted a project that balances commercial appeal with the authenticity of an independent artiste determined to tell his own story.
Leading the tracklist is Go Harder, featuring Kaiiro and CQ Blessing, an anthem centred on perseverance and ambition. It is followed by MIA, before the title track Bandz Up reinforces the project’s overarching message of financial aspiration and personal growth.
The previously released Too Clean Too Fresh, featuring Clarence and Kaiiro, also makes an appearance, having already introduced listeners to Lil Mars Shex’s confident lyrical style and polished production.
Closing the project is ZaZa, an energetic collaboration featuring Kaiiro, CQ Blessing, Mello Gee, Lista and Kidduchii. The track embraces the spirit of an underground cypher, bringing together multiple voices in a celebration of lyrical chemistry and the collaborative culture that continues to define independent hip-hop.
Throughout the EP, Lil Mars Shex explores themes familiar to many young Africans striving to build successful creative careers. Money, fashion, determination, self-belief and the pursuit of a better life form the foundation of the project, while his lyrics also reflect the realities of navigating different cultural spaces without losing one’s identity.
That identity is further reinforced through the rapper’s distinctive visual branding.
Known for his futuristic, alien-inspired aesthetic, Lil Mars Shex has developed a recognisable image that extends beyond music into fashion, photography and creative direction. The cosmic imagery that accompanies his releases has become a signature element of his brand, setting him apart within an increasingly crowded hip-hop landscape.
Away from the recording studio, the artiste has also carved out a reputation as an entrepreneur within the music ecosystem.
As the founder of Hip Hop Plug Worldwide, he has created a platform dedicated to promoting underground hip-hop talent and fostering collaboration among emerging artistes. Through the initiative’s Plug Sessions freestyle series, he has provided a stage for independent rappers while simultaneously strengthening his own presence within Gauteng’s vibrant hip-hop community.
Those performances have become an important component of the promotional campaign surrounding Bandz Up, with live showcases complementing an extensive visual rollout designed to build anticipation ahead of the EP’s release.
Fans will also have the opportunity to pre-save the project before it becomes available on all major digital streaming platforms on July 24.
For Lil Mars Shex, whose career has largely been built through independent releases and self-driven marketing, the EP symbolises the rewards of persistence and creative independence.
His journey mirrors that of many Zimbabwean musicians who have sought opportunities beyond the country’s borders while continuing to draw inspiration from home.
Although now based in South Africa, the Bulawayo-born rapper remains proud of his Zimbabwean heritage, with Bandz Up serving as a bridge between his upbringing and his present reality in Johannesburg.
The project tells a distinctly cross-border story—one where Zimbabwean resilience meets South African hustle, creating a sound that reflects the experiences of a new generation of African creatives whose identities transcend geographical boundaries.
Industry observers believe the release could prove to be a defining moment for the young rapper as independent African hip-hop continues to gain traction across digital platforms. With streaming services increasingly allowing artistes to reach international audiences without the backing of major record labels, projects such as Bandz Up demonstrate the growing potential of self-managed musicians to compete on a global stage.
As he prepares to celebrate his 25th birthday and unveil his first official body of work, Lil Mars Shex enters what he hopes will be the most significant phase of his career yet.
