Zimbabwe is edging closer to producing its first lithium battery, with the Government now shifting its focus to battery manufacturing, Mines and Mining Development Minister Polite Kambamura has said.
Minister Kambamura said while timelines for battery production would depend on incoming investment, Government had made significant progress in creating a conducive environment for local manufacturing.
He said lithium mining companies had complied with the Government’s ban on raw lithium exports by establishing beneficiation plants to process the mineral locally.
“We have made a lot of progress and we are happy that the companies have complied. We asked them to build processing plants and they have done that,” he said.
“It’s an ongoing process which may see tweaks and adjustments here and there so that in the end we come up with what works best.”
